Kelly embodies the very essence of compassionate, courageous nursing leadership.
The unit faced a challenging code when a patient arrived in severe respiratory distress. Despite this, the team remained professional and focused, with Kelly’s leadership never allowing the team to falter.
Kelly immediately stepped into action, providing calm, clear direction and assigning roles so every team member understood their responsibilities. Her ability to guide the room with confidence ensured that care remained organized and efficient. At the same time, she continued to oversee the department, ensuring the needs of all other patients were still met.
When critical equipment failed during the event, Kelly remained composed. She addressed the malfunction to the best of her ability in the moment and escalated the issue appropriately—both during and after the incident—to prevent future occurrences. Her advocacy ensured the team was heard, and her follow‑through demonstrated her commitment to safety.
After the event, Kelly facilitated a thoughtful debrief, offering space for reflection, emotional support, and acknowledgment of the team’s efforts. She reinforced that their work makes a difference, even in situations where outcomes are beyond their control.
Kelly is a leader her team looks up to. She leads by example, consistently stepping in to provide care and never remaining on the sidelines. She prioritizes patient safety and the safety of her team above all else. She advocates for what is right, refuses to let unsafe situations continue, and holds both herself and her team to the highest standards.
Kelly embodies the very essence of compassionate, courageous nursing leadership. Her actions during this event—and every day—make her deeply deserving of DAISY Nurse Leader Award recognition.
