Ms. Grenier showed incredible commitment, patience, and caring in her work with a difficult-to-engage veteran who was struggling with several issues.

Ms. Grenier did not limit her involvement with the Veteran to only her primary work function, being diabetes education. Instead, she took a holistic approach and saw how his diabetes was impacting many areas of his life, including his mental health.

Ms. Grenier had concerns for the Veteran's safety, as well as that of others, due to threats he had made during appointments with her. Ms. Grenier took all the proper steps to address these, but also went a significant and critical step further to build a trusting relationship with the Veteran and work with him on his resistance to seeking mental health care.

The result of this work was that Ms. Grenier was able to convince the Veteran to complete a mental health evaluation, which she had set up to directly follow an appointment with her. Ms. Grenier walked the Veteran to the Mental Health Walk-in Clinic, introduced him to the clinician who would be completing the evaluation, and made sure he was comfortable prior to leaving the area.

As a result of her diligence, the Veteran was able to have all of his needs met and is successfully on the path to better management of both his diabetes and mental health issues.
