Ms. Helene Powell has been the backbone of the Hematology/Oncology/Radiotherapy. She is truly the epitome and definition of what being a nurse leader really means. She leads the unit by example while demonstrating skills important to advocate and give veterans the care they need and deserve. We always hear about the amazing difference that employees make through many endeavors, but rarely do we hear about when individuals step up to the plate and accept a challenge to fulfill positions when a temporary detail is needed. Helene stepped into the role of chief nurse of acute care for inpatient services. During this time, she continued to maintain her role as nurse manager. She brought together all the inpatient acute care managers and assisted in keeping the many facets of the inpatient units and needs running appropriately and safely.

Helene exemplifies the positive discipline needed as a leader and brings forth positive ideas, including change where and when needed. She listens to her colleagues while working together on the many areas of each department regarding quality metrics and functioning. Helene really assists in bringing life to their suggestions and thoughts. Her contributions, bringing the managers together as one, truly define the faith her colleagues have in her leadership overall. Her hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed. She continues to lead with respect and by example. Helene strives for excellence in care for the veterans and other beneficiaries we serve with professionalism and diligence.

Helene is not only knowledgeable but also holds herself to a high level of integrity. She has mentored me and many others. She has precepted me and has given me the faith to believe in myself and a long-term career. She reinforces to the other staff and me to utilize the excellent skills we have. She encourages us in a positive way to work on areas we need to improve upon in the most professional and constructive way. This has made me who I am today. It has given me greater insight into how much I mean to those I care for. She has the ability to bring the best out of her staff, colleagues, and veteran care.
