Rather than getting frustrated or annoyed, he sat down in the chair, leaned on the bed railing, and had a conversation with my aunt, and found a different approach to finding out what was bothering her and what brought her in.
I brought my 84-year-old aunt to the SMCF Emergency Department. When she called me to bring her to the emergency room, all she could tell me was that something didn't feel right and that she was tired. She was taken back to the room right away, and shortly after, we were greeted by nurse Reese. He came in, introduced himself to us, and started asking my aunt questions about what brought her in. She didn't have her hearing aids in because she didn't feel well. I informed Reese that she didn't have her hearing aids in and that he would need to talk louder. He spoke loudly and clearly when taking her vitals and asking her questions. She repeatedly kept saying, "I don't know, I just don't feel right," to him. Rather than getting frustrated or annoyed, he sat down in the chair, leaned on the bed railing, and had a conversation with my aunt, and found a different approach to finding out what was bothering her and what brought her in.
Shortly after, my aunt started to open up more and give Reese the information he needed to help inform the doctor. His conversation also sparked questions my aunt had, and he made sure to answer them as best he could, speaking loudly and clearly so she could hear, but also calmly so she wouldn't get worked up. Given the time we arrived at the emergency department, I am guessing Reese had been working for 6 or more hours already, but you couldn't tell. He was so patient with my aunt and so kind to her. He even got her to perk up and laugh a little bit. His demeanor helped my aunt relax, put her mind at ease, and make the stressful situation a little bit easier. Whether or not Reese is awarded the DAISY Award, I wanted to make sure he knows how much I appreciate the kindness he showed that evening. He was truly amazing!
