Most important of all, she made us feel empowered and confident that we are excellent parents doing the right things, the right way.
We are new parents with a 3-day-old newborn. When the pediatrician nurse on the emergency line recommended we bring in our little I to the ER, our hearts sank and raced at the same time. We entered the CHOP KoP emergency department scared, nervous, worried, feeling guilty, and fearing the worst, as if we had already screwed up as new parents. From intake, the CHOP team was excellent. The ER was terrifying for us as our little girl seemed to be progressing worse with her Jaundice. The ER team was fast and decisive in their assessments and decisions, reassuring us they knew what they were doing. They communicated those decisions clearly and with empathy. Ultimately, they decided the NICU was the most appropriate decision to provide longer-term quality care to bring our baby back to good health. They admitted us around 1:00 a.m., and the team that we met was also thorough and kind in their explanations and background gathering. It wasn't until shift change around 8 am that morning that we met Madison as our new nurse for the day. From the start of her interactions with us and I her disposition, demeanor, attitude, knowledge, and skill immediately indicated we were in great hands for the next 12 hours. She treated our baby as if it were her own child. She proactively fed, cleaned diapers, and set the optimistic mood for the room while we watched our daughter lie under the blue UV therapy lights. Throughout the morning, afternoon, and evening, she went above and beyond to make I feel safe, loved, and cared for while simultaneously reassuring us as parents that we took the correct actions and did nothing wrong. She was thoughtful in her explanations, often working side by side with us to show different techniques for changing diapers, feeding, post-feeding burping, and swaddling. She explained her reasons and approaches simplistically and clearly and without judgement. Most important of all, she made us feel empowered and confident that we are excellent parents doing the right things, the right way. By the end of her shift, and the improvement of I under her care, we felt so much relief in the choice we made coming to CHOP. We've been around many nurses over the past week, being in two hospitals for a total of 6 days, and I can say without doubt that Madison in the CHOP KoP NICU is deserving of this Award and recognition.
