We will never forget the role she played in helping our daughter survive this moment in her life. Nurses like Jessica are the reason families like ours make it through the hardest days of our lives with hope.
I would like to nominate Nurse Jessica from the CVICU for the extraordinary care she provided to our daughter.
Our family has been living in the hospital for weeks during our daughter’s heart surgery and recovery. It has been one of the most frightening and overwhelming experiences of our lives. During that time, Jessica stood out as someone who truly went above and beyond for our child and our family.
Jessica didn’t just perform her job; she advocated for our daughter. When medications were delayed, she pushed the pharmacy to ensure they arrived quickly, multiple times. When we were confused or scared, she explained things in a calm and compassionate way. She paid attention to every detail and treated our daughter as if she were her own.
One moment that meant a lot to us happened when my wife and I had to step out to speak with the surgeon during a conference. Jessica stayed with our daughter and spent about 20 minutes playing with her and keeping her calm and entertained so she wouldn’t feel abandoned or scared. That wasn’t something she had to do as part of her duties, but she did it because she understood what our child needed in that moment.
What also meant the most to us was that Jessica even came in on a day that was originally her day off because we told her we felt safe when she was caring for her. That level of dedication is something we will never forget.
Throughout an extremely difficult time, Jessica helped keep our daughter comfortable and kept our family grounded. She was not only a nurse, but also an advocate, protector, and source of reassurance when we needed it most.
When parents leave their child in the hands of a medical team during heart surgery, it requires an unimaginable level of trust. Jessica earned that trust completely. Because of her, we were able to sleep, breathe, and believe our daughter was truly being protected.
We will never forget the role she played in helping our daughter survive this moment in her life. Nurses like Jessica are the reason families like ours make it through the hardest days of our lives with hope.
Thank you, Jessica, for the compassion, dedication, and strength you showed our family.
