That level of compassion and dedication is something I will never forget.
When I first arrived at Labor and Delivery for the birth of my second child, I was beyond terrified and completely alone. My fear stemmed from a traumatic lack of care during my first birth. I was in active labor, my baby's heart rate was dropping, and multiple people were speaking to me using frightening medical language. Everything felt chaotic, overwhelming, and isolating.
When I was transferred to a new room, and Nurse Murray took over my care, everything changed. From the moment she entered the room, the way she led instantly made me feel safe. She sat with me and never left my side. She advocated for me relentlessly. She read my chart thoroughly and in a way that showed she truly understood me, my history, and what was happening with both my baby and me. She reassured me calmly and confidently, telling me we were okay and that she was not going to let anything bad happen to us.
Nurse Murray stayed with me throughout my entire labor, never getting up and never leaving, which meant everything to me because I was alone until the very end. She took the time to explain what the doctors were saying in a way I could understand, helped ease my fear, and even brought moments of laughter that made an incredibly tense situation feel human. She treated me like a person, not a task or a number.
I later learned that Nurse Murray was supposed to be off the clock, yet she chose to stay with me and continue advocating for my care. That level of compassion and dedication is something I will never forget.
I had the worst birthing experience with my first child and easily the best birthing experience with my second, entirely because of Nurse Murray. She exemplifies what patient-centered care should look like. She treats patients as human beings, something that is often lost in high-pressure hospital environments. I wish all women could feel the level of safety, dignity, and reassurance that Nurse Murray gave me.
I truly believe that many doctors and staff could learn from her extraordinary level of care. She is everything the DAISY Award represents and more.
