From the beginning, Bryan was calm, steady, and fully present.

A friend of mine came to the ED on the worst day of his life. A work-related accident resulted in the traumatic amputation of both thumbs and the tip of another finger. Although his pain and bleeding were minimal, the shock of what had happened and the fear of what came next made everything feel even heavier.

The entire ED team was exceptional; everyone stepped in without hesitation. Registration, security, and radiology were also outstanding. But the person who left the greatest impression on me was Bryan Porath.

From the beginning, Bryan was calm, steady, and fully present. He explained every procedure before he touched the patient, helping him feel a sense of control in a moment when everything had been taken from him. He made room for the patient’s tears and fears, and he made sure his wife had time with him before he was transferred. Bryan talked them through what to expect with the helicopter transport and provided clear updates on timing so they weren’t left wondering what was happening next.

Once the patient was loaded, Bryan took time, again calmly and in plain language, to explain to the family what had happened and what to expect moving forward. This is a family that works in 911 and pre-hospital care, but Bryan never assumed they “already knew.” In that moment, they weren’t clinicians, they were a wife and children facing the possibility of a life changed forever.

Even while continuing essential tasks and thoughtfully planning each next step of care, Bryan created space for questions and reassurance. He managed this trauma in a methodical, well-organized way. He did not flounder, skip steps, slow down, or hesitate.

Bryan is a young nurse, and if this is the foundation of his practice, I cannot wait to see where his career takes him.
