She has impacted my life in that she gave me the tools to be a better first-time single mom, and she has impacted my baby's life, giving her medical care and love, which is not something that she had to do.
It is very hard to put into words what an incredible person and caretaker my nurse is.
The program through LCMC is a wonderful program that helped me, a first-time single mother, the first three months of my baby's life and my postpartum "fourth trimester." It takes a village to grow a child, and my nurse is part of my village.
Patrice came to the first appointment and listened to me, spoke to me, and educated me. She explained so many things I did not know, and may not have ever known, thoroughly and slowly, making sure I understood and felt comfortable. I never once felt dumb for asking simple questions, but rather she always welcomed my questions and answered them so well.
She spent so many hours with me during the visits, which made me feel like I was a priority, and although I think I generally receive great healthcare from my providers, she made me feel even more well taken care of, and that I was the only patient, the only mother in the world for those hours. Can you imagine feeling that way at such a new, vulnerable, and sometimes scary moment in your life?
Being a new mom, especially this being my first baby, and having a baby on my own, I needed some reassurance and some support. She gave me that and more, not only checking to make sure I was not suffering from PPD or anxiety from a checklist, but actually asking me questions about my life before the baby, and who I was. She made a concerted effort to make me feel like a person who was important, and important to her, and not just a patient on a list.
She gave me a lot of medical advice, having also had surgery, which was both from her medical knowledge and her personal experience. Again, she made me feel like she cared in a way that is above and beyond any other healthcare providers I have ever encountered. She has urged me to contact her even after the program ends with any questions. I know that she is not obligated to do so, but she does it because she genuinely cares about the moms and babies she visits.
I could not wait for every single visit and was genuinely upset when our last visit ended, knowing I would not see her again for another checkup. She has impacted my life in that she gave me the tools to be a better first-time single mom, and she has impacted my baby's life, giving her medical care and love, which is not something that she had to do.
Just to conclude, because it is really hard to put into words how wonderful Patrice is, watching her cradle my baby with affection and tell me what a great job I am doing made me so honored to have been able to participate in this program at Touro/LCMC. She has made a difference in my life and the lives of so many other moms.
