She respected our role as partners in my care while carrying out the doctor’s recommendations with precision and consistency.
This was my very first hospital stay, and I could not have asked for a more extraordinary nurse than Lydie Milfort. She was real, compassionate, and attentive in a way that made both my wife and me feel completely at ease. My wife, who was a medical school instructor in Orlando for nearly 10 years, could immediately see that Lydie was on top of everything. That brought us tremendous comfort, especially in such an uncertain time.
What made Lydie so special was how she combined professionalism with humanity. She took the time to explain things clearly, and when something required the doctor’s voice, she made sure we understood what could be shared. She never rushed, always listened, and always reassured. She respected our role as partners in my care while carrying out the doctor’s recommendations with precision and consistency.
But just as importantly, she made us laugh. We joked about food — I teased her that I wanted steak or lobster, and she laughed along with us, creating a sense of family rather than just patient and nurse. At one point, when the dietary staff delivered a tray and playfully called it a “porterhouse steak,” it connected back to our running joke in such a perfect way that it showed how much the whole team cared. Laughter really was the best medicine, and Lydie brought that healing quality into our room every single day.
At the end of my stay, we hugged and promised not to see each other again in a hospital — only in a store or somewhere out in the community. That is how genuine the connection felt. Lydie exemplifies what the DAISY Award is all about: extraordinary compassion, exceptional skill, and a heart for healing. She made my very first hospital stay not only bearable but memorable for all the right reasons. She truly deserves to be honored with this award.
