Mark educated primary nurses about the underlying ethical concerns—autonomy, truth-telling, and surrogate decision-making—empowering them to recognize and verbalize the issues at stake.
I am honored to nominate Mark for the DAISY Award because their practice consistently reflects the highest ideals of nursing ethics, compassion, and patient advocacy. Mark consistently demonstrates professional and ethical standards as defined in the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and serves as an exemplary role model for colleagues. Their actions illustrate a deep commitment to human dignity, patient-centered care, and moral courage.

One situation exemplifies Mark’s exceptional ethical practice. Mark was caring for a rapidly deteriorating stem cell transplant patient whose family experienced intense fear, uncertainty, and disagreement regarding the patient’s goals of care. Conflicting family perspectives created tension and misinformation that threatened the patient’s right to have their values respected. Recognizing the ethical implications, Mark immediately prioritized ethical awareness and ethical decision-making to address inequities and uphold ethical norms and values. They understood that unresolved conflict could lead to care misaligned with the patient’s wishes.

Drawing on their Certificate in Oncology Ethics from the Center for Clinical Ethics in Cancer Care, Mark took a proactive approach. With courage, they promoted initiatives that advance ethical behavior within nursing and healthcare by encouraging an early ethics consultation. Mark educated primary nurses about the underlying ethical concerns—autonomy, truth-telling, and surrogate decision-making—empowering them to recognize and verbalize the issues at stake. They facilitated clear, compassionate communication among the care team and fiercely advocated for the patient’s previously expressed wishes to remain central to all decisions.

Through calm presence and ethical clarity, Mark reduced emotional escalation, restored focus on the patient’s goals and comfort, and upheld the patient’s dignity. Their ongoing mentorship has helped colleagues identify ethical concerns early and initiate timely consultation, contributing to improved patient safety and fewer moral distress events on the unit.

The outcomes were meaningful for all involved. For the patient, Mark's actions ensured care aligned with their personal values, preserving autonomy and comfort. For the family, the ethics consultation created space for clarity, reconciliation, and shared understanding, ultimately bringing peace and confidence to their decision-making.

Colleagues reported increased ethical awareness, improved communication, and stronger advocacy skills. Mark’s guidance elevated team confidence in addressing ethically complex situations. At the organizational level, their leadership reinforced a culture grounded in safety, integrity, and respect for patient values.
