To say Jessica is invaluable still wouldn't do justice, because no matter how hard this job can get, she never stops caring and always extends empathy to people who need it.
I would like to recognize Jessica for her extraordinary compassion, dedication, and advocacy she shows to her patients and families. This patient had widely metastatic cancer, was bedbound from spinal mets, and lived alone after recently losing her husband. Her family wanted her to move to Georgia to live with her son, but coordinating a safe discharge and transport was extremely complicated and overwhelming.

Jessica had just returned from vacation when discharge was being discussed, and she immediately stepped in. She truly took this patient’s situation to heart and shared that she constantly thought about the patient on her drive home and on her way to work, trying to find the best way to help ensure a smooth and safe transition to Georgia for both the patient and her son.

Jessica worked tirelessly to coordinate home health services in Georgia, arranged for a hospital bed and DME to be delivered to the son’s home, and set up EMS transport. She advocated for a Foley catheter so the patient would remain comfortable during the long drive and so the son wouldn’t be placed in a difficult or unsafe situation. She also worked closely with EMS to assist with safely transferring the patient into the son’s car.

Throughout the entire process, Jessica maintained constant communication with the nurse, provider, patient, and especially the son, who was incredibly overwhelmed. The patient’s son was extremely appreciative of Jessica and all of her help, support, and frequent communication.

Thanks to Jessica’s dedication and advocacy, the patient had a smooth, safe discharge home. What had been a challenge for nearly two weeks was successfully completed in just five days.

I know some might say that this is simply Jessica’s job—but if you witnessed how tirelessly she worked, how much personal time and thought she devoted, and how committed she was to ensuring a smooth and safe transition all the way to Georgia, you would understand why she truly deserves this award.

This is just one of many examples of how Jessica consistently goes above and beyond to ensure patients have safe and dignified transitions home. 5T truly appreciates Jessica, her compassionate heart, and the dedication she brings to every patient she cares for. She is truly deserving of this DAISY Award.

***

The DAISY Award for Jessica has been a long time coming. This example is really one of so many I can think of when it comes to her going above and beyond for patients and their families.

Jessica had a family member who came from out of town to be there for their mother. The family member was overwhelmed with stress and emotion at the thought of their mother being taken to the hospital, and Jessica took the time to comfort and support the family member while the patient was on her unit.

Even after the patient moved to the ICU and, unfortunately, passed away, Jessica continued to provide support and resources to the family dealing with an unexpected and heartbreaking loss. The family made sure to reach out to let us know just how much Jessica's support meant to them during their grief and loss.

Jessica is more than just an employee doing well at her job. Jessica brings love to work, where it can be easy to get burned out and feel unseen. Jessica never loses sight of the humanity all around us that we, as healthcare workers and frontline workers, can sometimes become numb to.

The loss of a family member, the joy of a new child in the world, the worry about financial difficulties, getting medication on time, or losing housing. To say Jessica is invaluable still wouldn't do justice, because no matter how hard this job can get, she never stops caring and always extends empathy to people who need it.

I've learned so much from her over the years that I have worked with her, and I know many others can say the same. I'm proud of her beyond words can say, and I'm honored to be her friend. I know if she gets this award, she will hate to be in the spotlight, but too bad, baby. Sometimes love needs to be recognized for what it is. It's beautiful, and it should be what drives us every day.
