Hope made a difference for this man. She showed him that he deserved respect and to be heard.
Hope had a patient in the TCU who had an intellectual delay and paranoia. The patient is a very young, tall, and fit young man. He had been brought to the ED because his group home no longer wanted him to live there. He also has a legal guardian.

The young man was experiencing some paranoia and wanted to leave. He kind of got into Hope’s personal space and was able to obtain his belongings. He changed his clothes and came out ready to leave.

Security had been called, but Hope was already talking with the young man. When the security arrived, there was no need for de-escalation because Hope had worked magic. She spoke to the young man in low tones and listened to him. She validated his feelings and was able to convince him it was best if he stayed.

While the patient’s youth and stature could have been perceived as threatening, Hope never showed that. She only showed empathy and compassion. The patient was young, scared, and never truly threatening.

Hope made a difference for this man. She showed him that he deserved respect and to be heard.

Hope also made a difference for me. I was grateful to be able to observe such a professional and compassionate moment. I really appreciate Hope and what she always brings with her to work.
