Her gesture touched me deeply. Even after her shift ended late the previous day, she still took the time and effort to buy something to make her patient feel loved and supported.
One day, we received a patient who came alone for her surgery. For patient safety, we normally do not allow any patient to be discharged without an accompanying person. The patient explained that her doctor was aware of her situation, she had flown from another city, had no family nearby, and lived only with her elderly mother, who did not even know that her daughter was battling cancer. The team had already decided to admit her after the procedure, understanding her difficult circumstances.

Noor was the primary nurse assigned to the patient. She cared for her with genuine compassion, staying with her until a bed became available for admission, making sure she was comfortable and never felt alone. I was there with her during that time, and I saw how deeply she cared for the patient, as if she were her own family.

The next day, Noor came to work carrying a small bag with a box of chocolates and a thoughtful gift. When I asked who it was for, she said, “It’s for the patient. I don’t want her to feel that she’s alone. We’re her sisters now.”

Her gesture touched me deeply. Even after her shift ended late the previous day, she still took the time and effort to buy something to make her patient feel loved and supported. It reminded me that nursing goes far beyond the walls of our unit; it’s about touching hearts and making sure our patients feel seen, cared for, and never alone.

Weeks later, Noor surprised me again when she asked to switch duties with me. When I asked her why, she told me that the same patient had contacted her. The patient had another procedure scheduled and asked if she could accompany her, as she had no one else. Noor didn’t hesitate; she simply wanted to be there for her patient once again.

That moment left me speechless. Her kindness and empathy went far beyond professional duty; it was pure humanity.

Later, when the same patient returned for her follow-up visit, she passed by our unit looking for Noor just to greet her and thank her in person. That simple act spoke volumes about the impact Noor had made.

Noor truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award: compassion without limits, care beyond duty, and a heart that heals in more ways than one
