Taylor and Alyssa didn’t just care for my medical needs; they cared for me as a person, a mother, and a family member. Their compassion, professionalism, and empathy made an overwhelming situation manageable and gave me a gift I will always be grateful for.
I would like to recognize Alyssa Olsson and Taylor Doyle, nurses on the 8th floor (Waldemere Unit), for the extraordinary care, compassion, and dedication they showed me during an unexpected hospital admission.
I was admitted to the hospital just one week before my daughter’s wedding, making it an incredibly stressful and emotional time. From the very beginning, Taylor and Alyssa took the time to clearly explain what was happening with my health, answering my questions with patience and kindness and helping me feel informed and supported, especially when Alyssa came to my bed and squatted down to my eye level me and gently told me that I was being transferred from 8 Waldemere to the 8 Courtyard Cardiac unit because of my CHF diagnosis. I was frightened, and she reassured me they were purposely moving me there, which was right down the hall, so they could still keep an eye on me.
What truly set them apart, however, was how they went above and beyond their clinical responsibilities. They understood how important it was for me to be present at my daughter's wedding and how important it was to my daughter to have me there. They treated this not just as a wish, but as a priority.
Through their encouragement, advocacy, and genuine care, they pulled off the impossible and made plans for me to be able to attend my daughter’s small, last-minute ceremony on the hospital grounds. All of the incredible nurses who cared for me on Unit 8, Waldemere, and 8 Courtyard helped make me physically strong enough to attend one of the most important days of my life, but Taylor and Alyssa went above and beyond in supporting me, making me mentally strong enough.
Taylor and Alyssa didn’t just care for my medical needs; they cared for me as a person, a mother, and a family member. Their compassion, professionalism, and empathy made an overwhelming situation manageable and gave me a gift I will always be grateful for. They are truly deserving of this recognition through the DAISY Award.
A few days before the wedding, they both came to my room and said they would be there to help me and get me ready for the wedding. I was speechless. Who does this for a perfect stranger?
Come to find out, on the day of the wedding, Alyssa came in on her day off, and Taylor arranged to come to my room during her lunch break to do my hair. They also purchased hair products with their own money and brought a mirror for me to look at myself and make sure I was happy with their work.
They both helped me down to the courtyard for the small ceremony, pushing me in the wheelchair and assisting other family members with their needs. Their presence gave me so much comfort and reassurance. They were so genuine in the way they celebrated with my family, and never once did I feel like a burden to them.
It is hard to explain how big an impact their compassion has had on me; they were truly my saving grace during the most vulnerable time in my life. I am eternally grateful to them both.
