In the midst of unimaginable loss, Shaylie created moments of humanity, tenderness, and honor that I will carry with me forever.
Shaylie Daybell was a light during the darkest days of my life. I was admitted to the Labor & Delivery unit to give birth to my stillborn daughter, and I was devastated beyond comprehension. There is nothing that can prepare someone to hear that their very wanted baby has died. I was traumatized, vulnerable, heartbroken, and overwhelmed.

From the moment we met her, Shaylie cared for us with extraordinary empathy. She was deeply kind and attentive not only to me, but to my husband and our support people as we navigated both grief and a labor I was never prepared for. So much of that time feels blurry, but what I remember clearly is Shaylie’s steady compassion. She answered my many questions thoughtfully and respectfully, never rushing me, and she remained close by. She consistently checked on both my physical comfort and my emotional wellbeing.

Most importantly, Shaylie treated my daughter with dignity and profound respect. She used my daughter’s name. She spoke of how loved she is. She told me I was a good mother. In the midst of unimaginable loss, Shaylie created moments of humanity, tenderness, and honor that I will carry with me forever. She truly embodied what it means to serve with empathy, caring for each patient and family member with compassion, respect, and wholehearted presence.

Shaylie’s actions had a profound and lasting impact on my family and me. In a moment that could have felt purely clinical and traumatic, she brought humanity, dignity, and gentleness into the room. Because of her, my daughter’s birth was not defined only by loss, but also by love and honor. She helped me feel seen not just as a patient, but as a mother.

By using my daughter’s name, speaking of how loved she is, and affirming me as a good mother, she validated a bond that still exists. That affirmation has stayed with me long after leaving the hospital. Her steady presence reduced fear in a moment of overwhelming vulnerability. She made space for our grief while ensuring my physical and emotional wellbeing were cared for.

The way she treated our family shaped how we remember those days. In the midst of trauma, she created safety and compassion that continue to bring comfort even now. Her empathy did not just impact our hospital stay. It impacted how we carry our daughter’s memory and how I carry myself as her mother.
