I have seen her connect and understand people at a level that I only wish to empathize with. She is one amazing lady, and she is the best nurse I have ever met.
Lorraine is a one-of-a-kind person, nurse, and caregiver. She is always going above and beyond for everyone she meets, and we want to recognize her compassion.
Today, a Physician's Assistant wanted to point out to me that Lorraine was taking care of one of his patients who was an assault victim and a part of the trauma services. This individual was homeless, and in the process of being admitted and transferred from another facility, he lost all of his belongings. He told me that Lorraine had called her husband and asked him to find some clothes in his closet that they could donate to the patient so that he could get home with some clothes on.
I have seen Lorraine do this time and time again. I have seen her go as far as make some shorts and a shirt for an 800-pound man that couldn't fit in normal-size clothing. I have seen her teach a long-term patient's mother how to crochet to pass the time. I have seen her connect and understand people at a level that I only wish to empathize with. She is one amazing lady, and she is the best nurse I have ever met.
The impact that these actions make could be life-changing. A homeless man who was an assault victim doesn't expect that level of compassion and could truly change his mindset. Teaching a supportive mother to crochet to pass the time while she sits with her chronically ill son impacts so many things. It brightens mood, it helps her support and be there for her ill son, it teaches her a new hobby that she in turn started sharing with the patients and friends and family around her.
Giving an 800-pound man clothes for the first time to wear in years makes him feel like a human again. He was able to go in public and go outside and he hadnt been able to do that for quite some time.
Not only is she impacting those patients that she cares for, but she has also truly impacted me and how I try to be as a nurse. Nursing is more than meds and vitals. It is compassion and empathy, and I think that it is easy to get lost in protocols sometimes. Lorraine teaches us what it means to be human and slow down. She is the greatest.
