Samantha was the day nurse on the ninth day of my father's ICU stay. After eight days without a clear diagnosis, the stress and uncertainty for our family were significant. Compounding this was the level of care we had experienced, which had not met our expectations for an ICU setting.

Samantha was a breath of fresh air when we needed it most. When we arrived that morning, she greeted us warmly and provided a thorough update on my father's condition and how his night had gone. Throughout the day, she checked in regularly and consistently asked if there was anything she could do for him or for our family. Samantha noticed that my father was slumped in bed and took the time to reposition him properly. She then washed his hair, gave him a full bed bath, applied lotion, and changed his sheets. While these may seem like routine tasks, this was the first time in several days that my father was treated with such dignity, attentiveness, and compassion.

I recently retired from nursing myself, and I made sure to express our appreciation to Samantha directly. However, I felt it was important that her exceptional care also be formally recognized. What she provided may appear to be ordinary nursing, but to our family, it was extraordinary. Samantha was truly our hero that day. She may never fully know how much her care meant to our entire family, especially to my mother, who was deeply comforted to see her spouse of 66 years finally receiving the kind of thoughtful, respectful care he deserved.
