Seeing Nurse Babers advocate so intentionally for students has shown me what compassionate care truly looks like.
One situation that demonstrated Nurse Babers compassionate care involved several of our most medically vulnerable students—those who required regular monitoring and medication throughout the school day. Rather than simply checking their numbers and administering medication, Nurse Babers consistently took the time to sit with these students and explain what their diagnoses meant, how their bodies were responding, and how they could take small steps to care for themselves. She did this in a way that was gentle, patient, and age-appropriate, ensuring the students not only felt safe but also empowered.

What impacted me most was watching how her compassion extended far beyond the clinic. She works to build strong, trusting relationships with students throughout the day, especially those who need social-emotional support or simply a listening ear. Whether she is comforting a worried student or offering a quiet space for someone who needs a moment to regroup, she approaches each interaction with genuine care and respect.

Her compassion also shows in the way she supports the broader school community. She sets clear expectations for staff on the appropriate steps required to support students’ medical needs, ensuring that everyone plays a role in maintaining student safety. She reaches out to families with empathy—never judgment—providing resources, answering questions, and guiding them through the paperwork necessary for ongoing medical services. She even arranges medical vans so students from marginalized communities can access consistent healthcare.

Seeing Nurse Babers advocate so intentionally for students has shown me what compassionate care truly looks like. It isn’t just the medical tasks—it’s her commitment to relationships, dignity, equity, and partnership with families. Her actions remind me how profoundly a nurse’s compassion can shape a student’s sense of safety and belonging in our school community.
