Mark spent much time with his nurse to help my dad clear his airways and ensure that he was ok.
My father was recently in the hospital after suffering a stroke. Based on his age, 102, and his inability to swallow, the family, based on his wishes, decided to move him to palliative care and then hospice. While he was in Neuro ICU, the Neuro Ward on Floor A9, and in Palliative Care on A6, the nursing staff was amazing. Their dedication to the patients was truly admirable and much appreciated.
One nurse stood out, and I would like to nominate him for the DAISY Award – Mark, the Nurse in Charge. First, Mark was always there to assist the nurses and help my dad in any way to make him comfortable. He was also comforting to the family with his kind words and explanation of the situation.
One day, my dad had a very serious choking incident after eating food at our request. Mark spent much time with his nurse to help my dad clear his airways and ensure that he was ok. He was always available for questions and help when needed by the nurses or by us.
Another example was when my dad was visited by his great-grandson (1.5 years old), and Mark brought him a toy stethoscope to keep him busy.
These are just two examples of Mark’s caring, compassion, and competence, and he made an impression on my family. He was always there over the 2 weeks my dad was in the hospital, and even visited him in Palliative Care.
