Because of Hannah, our family was able to focus on loving B and grieving together, without worrying about the world outside that room.
After more than ten years of hospital stays, my brother-in-law B had truly experienced it all. As a family, we’ve learned to quickly recognize which nurses are exceptional, and from the very early hours of that morning, it was clear that Hannah was one of them. Hannah cared not only for B, but for all of us. She kept our family informed every step of the way, gently explaining what was changing and what we could expect.

Even after B had been declared as having no brain activity, Hannah never stopped treating him with dignity and humanity. She spoke to him throughout her care, explaining everything she was doing as if he could hear every word because to us, he was still our brother, our loved one. She laughed with us during moments of shared stories and memories, and she stood quietly with us through tears and heartbreak. She patiently guided my sister through an unimaginable process, answering every question with compassion and honesty.

Death is never easy to face, especially when the patient is so young and surrounded by a young family who loves him deeply. There was a constant flow of family coming in and out of the room, and through it all, Hannah remained steady and present. As things began to settle, she gently helped me encourage my sister to take a moment for herself to shower, eat, or rest after being awake for nearly 20 hours. She reassured us that B’s vitals were stable and made certain the night shift would immediately notify us if anything changed, and they did.

Because of Hannah, our family was able to focus on loving B and grieving together, without worrying about the world outside that room. Her compassion, respect, and unwavering presence made one of the hardest moments of our lives a little more bearable. She will never be forgotten by our family.
