His genuine empathy and understanding of the unique difficulties Veterans face created a safe space where I felt comfortable speaking openly about issues I might not have shared with others.
I am nominating Haydn Niehaus, RN, for The DAISY Award in recognition of his exceptional clinical skills and deeply compassionate care during my recent inpatient stay at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, University Drive Campus. As a deserving recipient, he exemplifies the dedication of the outstanding nurse that Veterans, their families, and staff recognize as a true role model. I was admitted for evaluation of acute neurological symptoms resulting in visual impairment, which left me feeling emotionally vulnerable and isolated amid significant uncertainty. Nurse Niehaus consistently went above and beyond to provide meaningful support. He took the time to sit with me and share his experiences from his family life, including his struggles. This openness encouraged me to discuss my own challenges, allowing me to process emotions more effectively and accelerate my emotional healing. His genuine empathy and understanding of the unique difficulties Veterans face created a safe space where I felt comfortable speaking openly about issues I might not have shared with others. This helped break down long-held stereotypes that often prevent Veterans from seeking help.

Nurse Niehaus excelled at translating complex medical terms into clear, simple language, ensuring I fully understood my condition, treatment plan, and next steps, which significantly improved my ability to cope and participate in my care. His strong communication skills, combined with unwavering compassion, reminded me of the importance of family, friends, and living fully despite adversity. These actions provided profound emotional support, fostering hope and resilience during a challenging hospitalization. Nurse Niehaus serves as a vital bridge between Veterans and healthcare providers, demonstrating that mental and physical health are inseparable. His care truly embodies patient-centered excellence and makes him an inspiring example for the entire team at VA Pittsburgh.
