Josianna “Josie” was there when we went through one of the most difficult times in our lives. One of our closest friends was declared brain dead unexpectedly. Josie consistently demonstrated kindness and empathy. She treated our friend with dignity and respect and never forgot that he was a human behind all the machines. We overwhelmed the floor with loved ones and friends. Josie continued to treat us all with patience and understanding. As terrible as the situation was, she remained compassionate, calm, and respectful. She also took the time to answer all our questions. She was attentive and anticipated everyone’s needs. During this time when we felt powerless and broken, her professionalism and kindness made a huge difference. We will never forget the dignity she showed to our friend and the comfort she gave to those of us who loved him. Josie represents what nursing is all about.
