She recognized a human need and stepped in without hesitation to provide support after witnessing the client endure a difficult experience.
I am honored to recognize Brooke McDonald for her extraordinary display of compassionate care and human compassion. While walking through the unit, I witnessed a truly heartwarming scene. Brooke was in the hallway, throwing a ball back and forth with a client, sharing a sweet, joyful moment. Her genuine smiles and efforts to make the client laugh were a testament to her commitment to compassionate care. It was clear that she was not just performing a task; she was intentionally creating a moment of dignity and joy for a client during a vulnerable time. The client clearly appreciated her presence, responding to the time she took to connect with him with visible comfort and engagement.

What makes this interaction even more remarkable is that this client was not even assigned to Brooke. She recognized a human need and stepped in without hesitation to provide support after witnessing the client endure a difficult experience. Earlier, the client, who was experiencing cognitive issues, was working with the physical therapy department. Brooke observed a distressing lack of professionalism and patience from the therapist, who became angry and even told the client to shut up. Deeply affected by the poor treatment the client was receiving, Brooke stayed by his side to provide the emotional safety net he clearly needed. Following this interaction, she began playing ball with him, seeking to bring him joy and comfort after such a negative experience.

The weight of this interaction and the lack of dignity shown to the client left Brooke emotionally upset for the remainder of the day, even leading her to tears as she processed the situation. This reaction was a profound reflection of her deep empathy and the high standard of care she believes every person deserves. Demonstrating maturity and courage well beyond her years, Brooke strongly advocated for the client by reporting the inappropriate behavior and lack of professionalism to the physical therapy manager. She refused to let the incident go unaddressed, ensuring that the client’s rights and well-being were protected.

Furthermore, Brooke went above and beyond her responsibilities by escorting the client back to his room afterward. She could see that the interaction with the therapy department had left him feeling dejected and awful, and she stayed with him to restore his sense of comfort and respect. The client was visibly moved by her kindness, and it was evident how much he valued the genuine care and time she dedicated to him. By stepping into a difficult situation to protect a client who was not even hers, Brooke built a profound connection of trust and respect, proving herself to be a true champion for those in her care. She embodies the very heart of nursing.
