She reminded us all that care does not end when life does—it continues in how we support those left behind.
Betsy Burdette helped lead our first annual Memorial Service at Highlands Ranch Hospital, creating an experience that was both deeply meaningful and incredibly supportive for grieving families. When planning the event, Betsy said, “I think it’s important that everyone has an invitation. I will call them all.” True to her word, she personally called every family who lost a loved one in the past year—over 150 individuals—offering comfort and ensuring they felt included.
Her dedication resulted in a standing-room-only gathering with more than 45 attendees. Families shared heartfelt stories about the exceptional care their loved ones received, specifically naming Betsy and also recognizing the entire staff. Many expressed that the service was “incredibly meaningful” and helped them feel connected and supported during a difficult time.
Betsy greeted every guest at the main entrance, walked them to the meditation room, and offered countless hugs. She led an interactive reading of the poem “We Remember Them,” inviting everyone to speak the words aloud, turning grief into a shared experience of remembrance and hope. Betsy’s warmth and presence turned a challenging day into one filled with compassion and community.
Her actions embody the very heart of nursing: compassion, advocacy, and presence. Betsy went far beyond her role, creating a space where families could find comfort and community during one of life’s hardest moments. She reminded us all that care does not end when life does—it continues in how we support those left behind.
Betsy’s dedication and humanity left a lasting impact on every person who attended. She is the kind of nurse who changes lives, and her work deserves to be honored with the DAISY Award.
