The morning we left, tears were shed by H because he was going to miss Nina.
On my last night at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, during my three-day stay, the best nurse, Nina, came in and asked me if I wanted to go get ice cream with her and a couple of other nurses. They took my mom and me down the “secret” elevator and ended up paying for our ice cream.

We sat downstairs and talked while we enjoyed our ice cream. On our way back to my room, Nina asked if we wanted to play a game with her. We then sat out in the lobby while she attended to her other patients and played a really fun card game. Nina made me feel welcomed, comfortable, and extremely cared for, and I cried the morning we were leaving because I wasn’t going to see her again.

I am not sure where to start when it comes to our wonderful nurse, Nina. From the moment my son checked into our room, we were met with kindness from all the nurses. There was something special about Nina.

Nina explained everything to H when she was starting his IV and the medicine he was receiving. She did not do anything to him until he understood and would always ask if we had any questions.

We were fortunate enough to have Nina each day we were there. Our second night, Nina asked H if he enjoyed ice cream. He of course said yes, and then proceeded to take him and I down to the lobby to enjoy a wonderful ice cream treat. There were four other nurses who joined us. They paid for our ice cream and then sat down with us and enjoyed a conversation.

On our way back to our room, Nina asked if H enjoyed games, and we then sat out in the lobby area of our floor, and all played a card game together. Nina still took care of her other patients while we played a game.

What was so special about her was the fact that she made H feel incredibly special and seen. She was always kind to him when she came in and checked on him, she talked with him and made conversation, and went above and beyond for us.

The morning we left, tears were shed by H because he was going to miss Nina. Nina and her fellow nurses are some of the best. We feel very fortunate and blessed to have them so near to us.

Thank you for everything, Nina!
