Today I met with D to discuss the impeccable care Karyn provided. The patient had the DAISY nomination form on his phone; however, he felt he articulated his thoughts much better than he could in writing, and he wanted to ensure his thoughts were captured. During this conversation, D shared that Karyn was a great nurse. He stated that he can be quirky, but that she always came in with a positive attitude. During this conversation, D was very tearful. He stated that he is a very spiritual man and that she inspired him. D is an artist and loves to sketch; however, over the past few months, he has not been sketching. During his time getting to know Karyn, he felt that she provided a human touch to healthcare. He stated he was sitting in bed one night, talking to her, and his overhead light came on. He stated he felt that was a sign as they were discussing his favorite colors and his life. On that night, he drew her a beautiful blue daisy, as blue was her favorite color. He asked Karyn if she had a mother and a grandmother, and she replied, "Yes." He then told her that they must be beautiful people, as she was such an amazing young woman. He hoped she would share the blue daisy picture with her family, and she said she would share it with both.

Another standout aspect of Karyn's work was her attention to detail. Karyn identified that D was labeled as a DNR. After a thorough review of what a DNR means, D decided that he wanted to be a full code. He does have a POLST form, and he stated that when he filled it out, he did not fully understand what it meant. He stated that Karyn went through all the details and allowed him to change his decision. The next morning, he stated that the song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John had been played. He attributed that to Karyn. He felt that she was very thorough and actually cared about him as a person. D has little family support here; however, Karyn has shown genuine kindness. He referred to Karyn at the "B" team, meaning the best team with the most beautiful and spiritual souls.
