"Above and beyond" was simply her baseline. Remarkably, she didn't just heal his body; she protected our spirits.
The story of our family’s greatest challenge begins with our son. Born with an imperforate anus, his entry into the world was overwhelming from the beginning. We were suddenly thrust into a reality of learning how to care for his colostomy and trying to support him through the demands of daily life. We fought to get through each exhausting ER visit, and endless sleepless nights marked by bag changes and poop explosions. All the while, we were desperately trying to keep him happy, care for our other child at home, and hold each other together.
For months, we held our breath, waiting for the big day of his pull-through surgery to finally arrive. But when that day came, things didn’t go according to plan. There were severe complications after the surgery, necessitating an emergency transfer to Hackensack University Medical Center for more advanced care. My husband and I were devastated, frightened, and sick with worry for our little boy. It truly felt as though our whole world had fallen apart.
And then, we met Danielle. From the exact moment she walked into our lives, Danielle became an integral part of our son's journey. Her obvious experience, deep medical knowledge, and impeccable skill set were immediately apparent, anchoring us in a sea of uncertainty. She was kind, yet direct; fiercely determined to help him and our family navigate this extremely stressful time.
There is one specific moment that will stay with me forever. One of the surgeons visited our room to deliver a heavy reality check. She explained that we were not in a good situation, that our son had a "bad problem," and though she was hopeful we could get him through it, this was going to be a much longer journey than we were originally prepped for. As those terrifying words washed over us, I remember looking to the background of the room. There was Danielle, quietly caring for him. She was listening to the conversation, and the genuine, palpable compassion on her face for our son and our family was a lifeline in our darkest hour.
Danielle became our anchor. She answered every single question we had (and there were many) and meticulously followed through with every request. When the walls of the hospital room began to feel too tight, we asked if there was any way we could get our son out for just a little bit. Danielle didn't just say she would look into it; she personally tracked down a stroller so we could wheel him around the floor and feel a sense of normalcy.
She didn't just care for the patient in front of her; she cared for our whole family. She asked about our other child at home and even gave us gifts to bring back to him so he wouldn't feel forgotten. It was clear that Danielle always had our son's best interest in mind, striving to give him the absolute best care possible at all times.
Managing his many tubes and bags was incredibly complex, but Danielle would constantly come up with innovative and creative ways to manage them, ensuring he was as comfortable and happy as possible. It felt like she was always two steps ahead of the monitors, the pain, and our own anxiety.
When the days were particularly hard, she would stay past her shift just to lend a helping hand. "Above and beyond" was simply her baseline. Remarkably, she didn't just heal his body; she protected our spirits. Because of Danielle, we were able to laugh about silly things and find humor when we could. That ability to smile had a deeply positive effect on us during a very dark time. She wasn't just his caregiver; she became our son's ultimate cheerleader in scrubs.
Ultimately, our resilient boy underwent 11 grueling hours of reconstructive surgery. After spending some time in the PICU, he was transferred back to the Pediatric floor. To our immense relief, Danielle was there to care for him once again.
His surgeons at Hackensack have undoubtedly worked miracles. But I firmly believe that he was only able to get through all of this because of the exceptional, unwavering care he received from his nurse, Danielle. Our family is eternally thankful for all that she has done for us, and we cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor.
