I couldn't help but notice Nurse Lasmas' use of "kindness with a smile" when providing medical assistance to my roommate. Upon entering the room, she greeted him with a welcoming smile and a kind hello. No matter how great or small the task at hand was, my roommate appeared determined to do his best because of her encouragement and motivation.

She used statements like: "I know you can do it!" "Great job!" and "Well done!" These statements were effective in keeping him motivated. Later, she shared with me that her mother was a good example for her as a child. Nurse Lasma emulates her mom's acts of kindness, which were taught to her as a child, with her VA patients.

Lasma, I feel fortunate to have met you. You were not my nurse, but your bedside manner with my roommate impressed me so much. Your teamwork and communication with coworkers were professional. My hope is that you will be honored with the DAISY Award.  I know the competition must be great, considering all the talented workers in the Bay Pines VA system.
