I have had many preceptors, but I know I would not be the nurse I am today had it not been for Lori's unwavering dedication to creating strong, skilled nurses.
Lori was my preceptor, both as a student nurse and nurse graduate, on 5 Wiser. I have had many preceptors, but I know I would not be the nurse I am today had it not been for Lori's unwavering dedication to creating strong, skilled nurses.
You often hear the phrase "nurses eat their young." Lori nurtures them instead and celebrates their successes. Nurses like Lori are the reason I decided to become a nurse. She's in it for the right reason: to take care of people.
I have watched Lori connect with a patient on a deeper level because she recognized that the patient's cruel remarks toward staff were said out of fear and delirium rather than malice. Lori dug deeper and learned about her life. She sang a church song with this patient, providing comfort and familiarity. The patient's attitude changed completely because she felt safe again. Sometimes, a patient just needs to feel understood.
Lori was by my side as I cared for my first palliative care patient. She showed me how to support the family during such a tragic time. She made such a difference that the letter from the family is still hanging up in our break room.
Lori never left my side while I prepared my first fetal demise for a grieving mother. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. Lori recognized that and provided the emotional support I needed before, during, and after that moment.
Lori taught me that the little things matter the most: washing a patient's matted hair; asking about the grandson they have bragged about; making sure their favorite TV show is on. It's the little things they remember most.
Lori was recently by my side during a code when I lost my first patient. There was no shame or disappointment. She provided emotional support, assisted with postmortem care, and showed me the step-by-step process for documentation. She even spent time educating the staff on the code cart and defibrillator so we'd be better prepared for the next code.
Lori is also one of our charge nurses, and she is an incredible leader. She is always helping other nurses and ensuring our patients receive the best care. I cannot thank her enough for shaping the nurse I am today.
