Dr. Gifty Ekua Merdiemah: The Compassionate Researcher & Educator

Dr. Gifty Ekua Merdiemah is a distinguished global health expert and Research Fellow who has dedicated her career to clinical excellence, staff education, and the development of national nursing policies. As the inaugural Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services for the Women and Children Department at UGMC, she was instrumental in establishing the unit as a model for high-quality care.

A Fogarty Fellow with multiple research grants in sickle cell and reproductive health, Dr. Merdiemah is a fierce advocate for family-centered and respectful maternity care. She utilizes her extensive academic background to lecture specialist nurses and mentor junior staff, instilling a vision for evidence-based, safe, and patient-centered practice.

Her dedication to compassionate care is best illustrated by her actions outside of her official research duties. On one occasion, after having already closed from work, she noticed a patient in distress arriving at the Emergency OPD and immediately organized a stretcher to assist with triaging, despite it not being her assigned department.

Her reassuring presence and subsequent daily visits—often accompanied by gifts of fruit—provided the hope the patient needed to recover. Dr. Merdiemah believes that every nurse has a duty to provide attention to the sick at any time, a philosophy she lives by while inspiring innovation and optimism in everyone she mentors.
