It is leaders like Nick who make a significant difference in the lives of patients, their families, and the entire healthcare team.
Nick has consistently shown unparalleled qualities in the provision of nursing care.

First and foremost, Nick excels in providing compassionate and patient-centered care. As a nurse manager, he not only ensures that patient care standards are upheld but also creates a nurturing environment for both patients and staff. Nick takes the time to listen to patients' concerns, understand their needs deeply, and ensure they feel heard and valued. His remarkable ability to make each patient feel like they are the most important person in the room significantly contributes to a positive healing environment.

Nick’s bedside manner is complemented by his exceptional clinical expertise and leadership. He is proficient in nursing skills and possesses extensive knowledge, ensuring that patients receive safe and effective care. Nick remains up to date with best practices and continually seeks opportunities for professional development. He actively participates in the VA Leadership Development Institute and significantly contributes to the PBPRNR program, where he encourages new nurses to develop their confidence, skills, and professional growth, ultimately guiding them to become future leaders. His leadership is pivotal in enabling his team to consistently deliver high-quality care.

One exemplary instance of Nick's extraordinary care involved a veteran with severe PTSD who needed labs drawn for a critical procedure. The patient had an extreme fear of needles, exacerbating their PTSD. Cognizant of the critical need for the procedure and the veteran's anxiety, Nick stepped up. He collaborated with the nurse manager of the GI lab and anesthesia, recognizing that the availability of sevoflurane gas in the GI lab could be beneficial. Nick arranged for the patient to come in before the scheduled cases in the GI Lab. With the collaboration of anesthesia, the patient was able to get the labs drawn without incident. This approach ensured no impact on the GI lab's schedule, presenting a much smoother and more efficient solution compared to using an entire OR room. Nick's compassion, knowledge, and expertise in this scenario far exceeded expectations, maintaining departmental efficiency while ensuring the veteran received the necessary care.

Furthermore, Nick is a respected and esteemed member of our healthcare team. He collaborates effortlessly with colleagues, always ready to assist and offer support when needed. Nick's positive attitude and unwavering dedication to the nursing profession inspire everyone around him. As a nurse manager, he leads by example, motivating his team to perform at their best and providing invaluable mentorship to help them grow professionally. Nick is dedicated to acknowledging his team's hard work by honoring and nominating them for various recognitions, such as Great Catch, ICARE, Employee of the Month, and HERO awards. He also actively encourages team members to nominate each other, fostering a culture of mutual appreciation and recognition within the team.

I have had the pleasure of working under Nick as a staff nurse and later transitioning to an assistant nurse manager under his guidance. His unwavering mentorship and support have propelled me into my current role as a nurse manager. Nick exemplifies how, with the right mentorship and assistance, a manager can elevate an employee to new heights. His dedication to professional development and empowering his team has had a profound impact on my career and the careers of many others.

In summary, Nick embodies the essence of an extraordinary nurse and an exceptional leader. His compassion, clinical excellence, and unwavering commitment to patient care make him an eminently deserving candidate for the DAISY Award. It is leaders like Nick who make a significant difference in the lives of patients, their families, and the entire healthcare team. It is my privilege to nominate him for this prestigious recognition.
