Adiza Bogobiri Mohamed: The Compassionate and Fearless Rugby Medic of the Volta Lake

Adiza Bogobiri Mohamed is a Senior Community Health Nurse whose service extends across the challenging terrains of the Northern Region and the waters of the Volta Lake. A dedicated athlete and medic for the Rugby League Federation of Ghana, Adiza launched an innovative initiative using rugby to empower young girls.

Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, service, and an unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of young women in her community and beyond.

In a community where girls as young as 11 faced early marriage and were denied education, Adiza used sports to build their self-esteem and redirect their energies toward purposeful living. Through her advocacy and mentorship, several girls have escaped exploitation and even earned scholarships to continue their education in Accra. Adiza’s commitment to maternal health often requires dangerous travel to reach marginalized lakeside populations.

On one notable occasion, while returning from a rural immunization outreach, her boat capsized on the Volta Lake, forcing her to swim to safety. Undeterred by this trauma, she continues to utilize boats to provide care. She once intercepted a passenger boat on the lake to attend to a woman in distress, successfully managing a high-risk breech delivery and accompanying the mother to the hospital to ensure both mother and baby were safe and nourished.

Adiza remains a beacon of hope, proving that compassionate care knows no boundaries.
