Everyone there was absolutely wonderful, but the personal touches that Kaitlyn provided my son also helped me be present and grounded.
Nurse Kaitlyn was incredible!
My son was admitted on a Thursday at around 1 a.m. He was in severe pain and discomfort, and he was visibly exhausted. We were warmly and kindly welcomed by Nurse Kaitlyn. She was also very considerate of another patient that he would be sharing a hospital room with, and asked me to come out to go over the details of what was occurring with him.
Nurse Kaitlyn was attentive, inquisitive, and genuine in her care as she gathered more details from me, especially in the way she communicated with my son. Particularly, she acknowledged him and validated what he had gone through in such a short amount of time at the hospital by addressing him directly and stating, "I see you got your IV, wasn't that totally awful?", and in this moment, I just knew she made him feel seen when he nodded his head in agreement. (Thank you for this, Kaitlyn.)
My son is shy and generally quiet around people, and under the circumstances, he was even more so, but that interaction that may seem so minimal was truly monumental for him.
I want to bring light to Kaitlyn's genuine care by sharing how she helped him swallow his first-ever pill. I believe it was about 2 a.m., and pain medication was administered along with a small disposable cup that held a pill. Immediately, I nervously advised her that he had never swallowed a pill before, and she was encouraging and so patient with him. Kaitlyn went on to speak gently and kindly, as well as provide him guidance in the best way to swallow a pill, and he did it!
We were so fortunate to have Kaitlyn as my son's nurse. Everyone there was absolutely wonderful, but the personal touches that Kaitlyn provided my son also helped me be present and grounded. The small things really are the big things, and Kaitlyn allowed space for my son and what he was going through.
We are so fortunate to have Kaitlyn as a nurse for our babies!
