He spoke with me in an unhurried way, then offered to let me visit my brother face to face.
My brother was diagnosed with COVID. Staff had not been allowing any visitors. I knew my brother’s health was poor, and I really wanted to see him. My brother had not seen anyone who knew him, and he was being kept isolated.
My last trip to the hospital I was not allowed to enter due to my brother’s status, bothering my courage, I approached the reception security thinking, after I am denied, I’ll just try to reach my brother by phone – which I had been successful at before. To my surprise, security gave me a bracelet pass, and I quickly went to the room, hoping at least to talk with my brother’s nurse.
I met Matthew outside his door, who quickly and clearly gave me the latest updates on his condition. I was very glad to be able to ask questions and get responses that I could understand, and that my concerns were understood by someone who could represent them to a doctor. Matthew was that person! He spoke with me in an unhurried way, then offered to let me visit my brother face to face.
I wore the gown, mask, and gloves given. What joy this brought to me – to be able to physically see and talk face to face with him after such a long, uncomfortable separation – to tell and show my brother the love of Christ. My brother looked right into my eyes and listened intently, although he was too weak to say much.
My brother died less than two days later. I am so thankful to people like Matthew for making me feel welcome to visit, and for being able to communicate clearly and show that they understand family concerns.
