I truly believe that if more nurses took the time to slow down and show genuine care as Gretchen did, it would profoundly enhance the healthcare experience.
I came in feeling overwhelmed with heat exhaustion, acute renal failure, and severe dehydration. When I was transferred to the third floor, my nurse, Gretchen, came in and immediately made me feel at ease. She was knowledgeable and approached me with such kindness. As she began her routine of assessing my situation, she asked the typical questions about self-harm. I assured her that it didn’t apply to me, but I jokingly mentioned that I felt like a failure to my wife and six kids for collapsing while trying to support them. Gretchen listened intently and gently responded, “I can tell from the way you speak that you’re a great dad and husband. Just think—if you were to harm yourself, would that really be better or worse for your family?” Her words struck a chord with me. Tears formed in my eyes as I finally realized that I don’t have to push my body to its limits. I can prioritize my own well-being, and just being present for my loved ones, including my grandkids, is more than enough. I’ve always been somewhat stubborn, like many men, and I often struggle to listen to advice. But this time, I really heard her, not just with my mind but also with my heart. It was the reassurance I desperately needed. I truly believe that if more nurses took the time to slow down and show genuine care as Gretchen did, it would profoundly enhance the healthcare experience. The entire team on the 3W unit was incredible—so helpful and attentive. Thank you all for your compassion and support!
