Amber came in and spoke to me in a gentle, caring voice, and she said he’s in good hands with me.
My 21-year-old was admitted to WellSpan Lebanon, PA, on the ICU floor. At the time, I had no answers; my son was on a ventilator for a few days. I, as his mom, sat there scared, confused, and helpless. Leaving his room was one of the hardest things I had to do. Amber came in and spoke to me in a gentle, caring voice, and she said he’s in good hands with me. She assured me she would take care of my son and would call me with any changes. Amber comforted me when I needed it the most. Amber explained everything, even the meds my son was receiving, even up to the times, making me feel very involved in my son’s care. When my son woke up, he wanted me. Amber made sure that it was possible to invite me into his room after hours. My son was agitated, and Amber showed so much grace and patience. I watched her take my son to the bathroom multiple times, even when he felt he needed it but did not have to. She was so patient with him. She made sure he was warm and even made sure I was too, offering me a recliner, blankets, and water. As a mother, this is what I look for in our time of need: a person who will take care of your child the way we would. I found that in Amber, because of her, my heart was less heavy. I was able to leave his room and trust my son would be OK. There’s so much more I can say about Amber. Nurses like her deserve the world; her heart is so pure, and nursing is definitely her calling.
