This morning, I wanted to bring a little sunshine to my dad. I ordered a coffee and grabbed an apple juice from the cafe. My debit card was on hold because I was traveling and did not respond to a text from my bank. So, I fumbled in my purse for cash and put the apple juice back. Before I could even blush from embarrassment, Shatonya appeared and calmly said, "I've got it, and keep that apple juice," with the kindest and most reassuring smile, "I've been there." What she didn't know is that my dad, an 86-year-old retired firefighter and truly the nicest guy and best Dad, is suffering from a stage IV decubitus ulcer he acquired while recovering in a skilled nursing facility. Married to my mom for 66 years. My mom is in a memory care unit due to dementia that was not evident until my dad fractured his femur in February. To care for her and preserve her dignity, he never asked his kids for help. We did not know how bad it was. Life is less sunny for my dad without his love. He is understandably down and sometimes feels hopeless. But he loves his coffee and apple juice. I wish you could have seen his smile when I walked in with his favorites. Thank you, Shatonya. I have been an RN for 32 years and quit my job in June. Don't miss working, but Shatonya reminded me of how much I miss nurses.
