Her persistence and attention to detail turned a potentially frustrating situation into one where the patient and family felt heard, cared for, and valued.
I would like to nominate Emem, RN, for the DAISY Award because she demonstrated extraordinary compassion, perseverance, and patient advocacy during a challenging situation with one of our patients and his family. What could have easily been treated as a simple supply issue instead became an opportunity for Emem to show what true nursing dedication looks like.
The patient had a nephrostomy bag that required specific supplies that were not immediately available. This created understandable concern and frustration for both the patient and his family. Rather than allowing the situation to become stressful or unresolved, Emem stepped in and took full ownership of the problem. She spent hours working alongside the patient and his family, troubleshooting the issue and searching for solutions when the correct supplies were not readily available.
Emem did not stop at simply identifying the problem. She made multiple calls, worked through the ordering process, and coordinated the delivery of the correct supplies to ensure the patient’s needs were met safely and appropriately. Throughout the entire process, she remained patient, calm, and reassuring. She made sure the patient felt comfortable and supported while waiting for the supplies to arrive, never making him feel like he was a burden or that his situation was inconvenient.
What stood out the most was Emem’s commitment to the patient’s dignity and peace of mind. She spent time explaining what was happening, reassuring the family, and ensuring the patient remained comfortable while she worked behind the scenes to solve the problem.
