She sees beyond the ICU and treats the individual as an equal despite the current limitations they are facing.
The moment that I met Ms. Johanna “Jo” Whiteford, I knew that she was special. She greeted me with a friendly smile that lit up the room. She was providing care for my critically ill husband, but not in the way that any other nurse cared for him. She spoke to him as if she had known him forever. It was as if she were having a conversation with a family member or friend. She spoke to him as she provided every treatment, explaining what she was doing, never missing a beat. When she explained the procedure for brushing his teeth, she also explained why it was needed. She explained why she would suction his vent prior to the procedure and why it was necessary. She took time with him, never rushing to get through the process and move to the next patient. To Jo, my husband was not just a patient; he was a person. A person behind the tubes, the illness, and the diagnoses. She sees beyond the ICU and treats the individual as an equal despite the current limitations they are facing.
Jo was constantly checking every pump, drain, and IV site to ensure that everything was functioning properly. She reviewed my husband’s medications to ensure that they were ordered correctly. She was the most thorough nurse that he ever had. She ensured that his heels were off the bed, as my husband is diabetic, and that he was in a comfortable position to prevent wounds. Every aspect of his care was important to her.
I often asked myself, “How could such a young woman be so in tune with the needs of someone like my husband?” This led me to my faith and to scripture. Matthew 25:40 states, “When you do it unto the least of these, you do it unto me”. I believe that Jo signifies this scripture in her ministry to others. Her care and compassion to all that she meets shows how she cares deeply about all people, but most especially those for whom she treats through her nursing career.
Jo is the kindest, most caring nurse that I have ever met. She is an angel sent from God to help critically ill patients endure one of the most difficult events of their lives. No one wants to be intubated or to be in ICU, but if you find yourself in this situation, consider yourself blessed if Johanna Whiteford is your nurse.
