She treats every patient as if they were her own family, and every staff member with respect and genuine care. Many of us have stayed in this unit because of her unwavering support and belief in our potential.
I am honored to recognize Wan Yee Chen because she exemplifies the true meaning of leadership in nursing, leading not just with her head but with her heart as well. In our shift, she is more than just a nurse. She is our anchor, whether it's a busy shift filled with admissions or a quiet day that suddenly turns critical; she remains calm, decisive, and focused.
She never sits at the nurses' station. She is right there at the bedside with us, rolling up her sleeves, helping with patient care whenever we need extra hands. Washing patients, mobilizing patients, receiving new admissions—she is always there with the team, giving her all. She doesn’t just manage a shift; she mentors us. She takes the time to explain the why behind every decision, guiding new nurses through challenges and encouraging experienced ones to keep learning and growing.
Her feedback is always constructive, never critical, and she leads through collaboration. Every achievement—no matter how small—is recognized and celebrated. What makes her truly extraordinary is that she leads by example. She treats every patient as if they were her own family, and every staff member with respect and genuine care. Many of us have stayed in this unit because of her unwavering support and belief in our potential.
One moment that will stay with me forever was during a particularly critical situation. A patient’s condition was rapidly deteriorating, and the tension in the room was palpable. Yet in the middle of the chaos, she stood calm and steadfast. Her instructions were clear, her leadership unwavering. She guided the team with confidence, reassured the anxious family with gentle kindness, and reminded us all that even in moments of urgency, there is always room for compassion.
The patient survived—but what I remember most is how she made everyone, both staff and family, feel safe. In short, she doesn’t just lead—she uplifts. She inspires us to be not only better nurses, but better people. She is truly the heartbeat of our team, and there is no one more deserving of the DAISY Leader Award.
