Lauren’s impact extends far beyond education and emotional support. She is a fierce and tireless advocate, navigating complex insurance hurdles, coordinating infusions, securing urgent approvals, and anticipating patient needs with remarkable attention to detail.
Lauren is the heart of the Children’s Mercy IBD program, consistently delivering extraordinary, patient-centered care with unmatched compassion, expertise, and dedication. Families frequently describe her as the first person who truly listens—validating their fears, answering every question, and providing calm, clear guidance during some of the most overwhelming moments of their lives. Many credit her with changing the trajectory of their child’s health and stability.

Lauren’s impact extends far beyond education and emotional support. She is a fierce and tireless advocate, navigating complex insurance hurdles, coordinating infusions, securing urgent approvals, and anticipating patient needs with remarkable attention to detail. Her vigilance has even prevented potential medication errors, ensuring safe and appropriate care. Providers routinely highlight her ability to manage a demanding caseload—at one time, supporting more than 800 patients—while maintaining professionalism, grace, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

One colleague jokes, “If Lauren got paid $0.05 for every hour she spent on the phone talking families through medical crises, coordinating outside infusions, and advocating for patients with payors, she'd probably be rich as Taylor Swift. And she'd probably still keep doing this job.”

Families and colleagues alike describe Lauren as the “glue” of the IBD clinic. She is prompt, knowledgeable, endlessly dependable, and deeply invested in the well-being of every child she serves. She follows up after hospitalizations, reassures newly diagnosed families, and consistently goes above and beyond the scope of her role.

Lauren also champions the broader IBD community, serving as a visible leader at Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation events, including being honored at the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Take Steps Walk. Within the team, Lauren is known for her kindness, humility, and the joy she brings to colleagues—remembering birthdays, celebrating milestones, and supporting others through transitions and challenges.

Despite substantial staff turnover and system changes, she has remained a steady, positive force whose leadership and presence continue to elevate the entire program.

Lauren embodies every DAISY value: extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence, and a steadfast dedication to patients and families. As one patient’s parent notes, “She is the nurse every parent hopes to have by their side, and she is profoundly deserving of this recognition.”
