When we shared our concerns with Leo, he listened attentively and took immediate action.
We would like to nominate Leo from the ICU for the DAISY Award in recognition of his extraordinary nursing care, advocacy, and compassion during a very difficult time for our family.
While my husband was sedated and unable to speak for himself, Leo became his voice and his advocate. My husband requires a Foley catheter replacement every 3–4 weeks to prevent infection. Although this need was communicated during his initial hospital admission, the catheter was not changed until his condition worsened and he was transferred to the ICU, where it was discovered to be infected.
When we shared our concerns with Leo, he listened attentively and took immediate action. He persistently contacted the urology team to ensure the catheter was replaced. When the procedure was initially questioned, Leo respectfully but firmly advocated for our family’s wishes and made certain it was completed. His determination and advocacy directly contributed to my husband receiving the necessary care.
Beyond his clinical advocacy, Leo demonstrated exceptional compassion for our family. He kept us informed with clear and timely updates, ensured we received communication from the medical team, and regularly checked in on us to make sure we felt supported and comfortable.
Leo went above and beyond the expectations of his role. His professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care made a profound difference for my husband and our family. We are deeply grateful for the exceptional care he provided and believe he truly exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
