What truly distinguished Cameron was her clinical vigilance and advocacy.
Our son underwent a hemispherectomy at CHOP in late October, and amidst the fear and uncertainty of that experience, one nurse stood out as a true light, Nurse Cameron Centrella. Her exceptional combination of clinical mastery, intuition, and deep compassion elevated the quality of care to something extraordinary.
Cameron was not the first, second, or even third nurse we had in the ICU, but she was truly exceptional. From the moment she entered the room, her calm presence grounded not only my husband and me but also our autistic son. She anticipated his needs with remarkable accuracy and explained every step of his care with clarity and kindness. Whether performing neuro checks, managing drains and seizure monitoring, balancing fluids, or titrating medications, she worked with precision while maintaining an unwavering sense of empathy.
What truly distinguished Cameron was her clinical vigilance and advocacy. A couple of examples are when she recognized subtle neurological changes, such as abnormal eye movements, and immediately collaborated with the neuro team, likely preventing complications. When a resident arrived to remove my son's drain, Cameron respectfully advocated for the necessary wait time to allow the lidocaine to take full effect, ensuring the least pain possible. Her ability to balance technical skill with genuine warmth was extraordinary; she spoke to my son not as a patient, but as a person, recognizing when he needed comfort, distraction, or just a touch of humor to get through a tough moment.
Cameron also went above and beyond for us as parents. She made sure all of our questions were answered and that we had space to rest and process, never making us feel in the way or judged. She translated complex medical information into language we could understand and consistently appeared at the exact moment we needed reassurance.
We are a Johns Hopkins family, accustomed to brilliant care, yet Cameron's expertise, humanity, and advocacy truly set her apart. She embodies the essence of nursing: skilled hands, a sharp mind, and an even bigger heart. Please accept this nomination as a small gesture of our immense gratitude.
