Sarah got to her level, looked her in the eye, and assured her that it was not at all a problem and that she did not need to apologize.
Sarah was my daughter's nurse for, I think, three nights during her two hospital stays at Saint Joseph Hospital. Besides doing the nursing work with great professionalism and attention to detail, Sarah was absolutely amazing in interacting with my daughter to help ease the difficult procedures or experiences. When my daughter arrived, it was recommended that she have an NG tube. It was so so painful, and my daughter could not tolerate it. Sarah did her best to help her. Keep it in for the treatment, but it was so understanding and supportive when my daughter simply could not take it anymore. My daughter also had a G-tube that drained. One night, as she turned over, it came disconnected and spilled all over the bed. My daughter felt so bad that it happened and said she was sorry to Sarah. Sarah got to her level, looked her in the eye, and assured her that it was not at all a problem and that she did not need to apologize. My daughter repeated Sarah‘s response over the coming days because it gave her such ass assurance that that situation was OK, but also that the whole process of getting better would go OK. My daughter felt like Sarah was like an older sister, who is, of course, a nurse, but also gives great support and encouragement. As a result of Sarah‘s interactions, I do believe this hospital experience went much better for my daughter. Instead of retreating into the pain or discomfort, my daughter would sit up and chat with Sarah. Because of the personal interaction, my daughter was also more willing to cooperate with blood draws and whatever else was needed for the hospital procedures. My daughter wants to make sure that we send Sarah a gift card to express our appreciation.
