Before we even knew the extent of his health and were still trying to discharge him home, Anita would make sure he got up from bed to the chair, often completed his meds and hygiene care himself, and provided him with laughs and comfort.
Recently, we had an MSU patient whom we were treating for hypoxia who ended up transitioning to Hospice and passing away. He was admitted to MSU service and, after over a week, was admitted to medicine and boarded on our unit until a bed on Sands 600 became available. He went briefly to Hildebrandt Hospice, where he passed. During this time in our unit, he was a patient who was challenging, difficult to please, and, overall, not engaging with the staff as we would have hoped. Anita took it upon herself to make sure this patient was seen, heard, and cared for. Before we even knew the extent of his health and were still trying to discharge him home, Anita would make sure he got up from bed to the chair, often completed his meds and hygiene care himself, and provided him with laughs and comfort.
Once it was discovered he was nearing the end, palliative and hospice care got involved. Anita made sure he and his family were aware of his plan of care, spent time with them, and developed a bond with them. Upon his passing, the family posted the following: "The family would like to thank the RGH 4200 staff and Richard's favorite nurse, Anita, as well as Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center staff for helping us to navigate Richard's final moments." His family said that in his final moments, he reflected and mentioned Anita by name, how she helped him process and accept this transition. Anita was able to relate to a challenging patient in his most desperate hour. She provided him comfort while joking with him about seeing his wife in the sky soon. The more time she spent with him, the more she discovered about him, like how he had taken in and helped raise more than 150 foster children. She saw the good in him and sees the good in everyone. This is one small example of how Anita sees and understands people, how she is an amazing nurse and person. On behalf of the whole team and organization, thank you!
