She cared so deeply and so lovingly, it’s hard for me to reconcile that at the end of the day, this is just a job for her because it’s more than that.
Ines, affectionately known as Liberty, has touched my life in the most profound way. I met Liberty back in 2023 when she cared for my daughter in the NICU at The Valley Hospital. Liberty was very technical with a gentle bedside manner, an excellent nurse. In 2025, I gave birth to my son at 24 weeks of gestation, and we found ourselves back at The Valley Hospital NICU, with a long road ahead of us; Liberty was with us every step of the way since day 1. I instantly remembered her, and throughout our 100+ day journey in the NICU, she never left my son’s side or mine. She held my tiny baby through his toughest battles and coached me through the hardest moments. She prayed the Rosary for my son every day and helped me keep the faith that we would make it through. There were days she’d barely leave his room, stoically standing guard, tending to every little thing. She would massage his nose so the CPAP would hurt less, apply Aquaphor so his skin stayed moist, and, when he got bigger, help me take his Christmas pictures. Most importantly, she made us laugh when we really needed to. Even before I had a NICU baby, I heard NICU nurses were the toughest, most protective nurses in the hospital. Those NICU babies were their babies. Liberty proved that to me every day. She protected my tiny, vulnerable son when I couldn’t. She would remind me that this was her baby, too. She cared so deeply and so lovingly, it’s hard for me to reconcile that at the end of the day, this is just a job for her because it’s more than that. She would text other nurses to check in while she was on vacation and fight to care for my son when she was on the floor. I will never be able to really thank Liberty for all that she has done for my family. Liberty had been a nurse for more than 30 years, all around the world, and I’m so grateful that she made her way to us. I really hope that she gets the DAISY Award because she is not just a nurse, she is an angel on earth.
