Geoffrey Chiira, RN2 on Ward C5, is being recognized for extraordinary work carried out on a particular day.

On that date, a rapid response was initiated on the ward. A patient had attempted to swallow a plastic cap and was choking. Upon arrival, Geoffrey took control of the situation and began the Heimlich Maneuver. Although the cap was initially difficult to dislodge, Geoffrey remained focused and persistent, continuing to perform the maneuver until the obstruction was cleared and the patient was okay.

This quick response saved a life. This choking could have led to a complete airway obstruction and death within minutes. Geoffrey was able to work calmly under pressure and used his clinical judgment and skills. This exemplifies the best of patient-centered care.
