Shinu called a rapid response who ordered a stat CT and found spinal compartment syndrome secondary to spinal hematoma
Shinu took care of my father-in-law. He was downgraded from the ICU post EKOS to 7E after suffering from a bilateral pulmonary embolism. That morning after being transferred, Shinu was extremely attentive to my father-in-law. He has a history of prior strokes with contractions in both arms/hands. So, he is unable to complete all ADLs independently. However, he ambulates independently without assistance. That day, he was complaining of lower back pain that resembled his history of sciatica. Shinu assisted my father-in-law in getting comfortable in bed multiple times and then assisted in getting him up to the shower, as it had been a couple of days since his last. Unfortunately, his pain worsened throughout the day. Shinu paged the providers on hand to ensure he received adequate pain medication.

As the day progressed, his back pain transformed into numbness in his legs. Shinu was persistent in paging multiple teams throughout the day to get someone aware of helping him. As time went on, my father-in-law's pain and numbness progressed to bilateral paralysis from the knees down. Not satisfied with the response, Shinu called a rapid response who ordered a stat CT and found spinal compartment syndrome secondary to spinal hematoma. My father-in-law was emergently transferred to Henry Ford Detroit for an MRI and a laminectomy.

Post surgery, the surgeon stated that my father-in-law has a positive prognosis of being able to walk again and that the window for this procedure to be successful is very narrow (about 24 hours). If the nurse was not persistent and did not call the rapid, he might not have been within the window for the surgery, and likely would never walk again.

Thank you to Shinu for being so amazing and caring. Because of you, my father-in-law will likely walk again and continue to play with his two new granddaughters.
