My husband began experiencing alarming heart complications. At first, we hoped it was just a fleeting episode, perhaps stress or dehydration. We just never imagined that the tipping point would occur while we were floating in the middle of the ocean. As healthcare professionals ourselves, my husband and I are accustomed to providing care, making decisions, and guiding others through medical crises. But in that moment, we were no longer clinicians. We were vulnerable. We were scared. And we were at the mercy of circumstances beyond our control. Thankfully, we made it back to the States safely and were immediately directed to Integris Baptist Medical Center. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. We were met with a level of care and compassion that exceeded every expectation.

One nurse in particular, a true leader in his field, stood out not just for his clinical expertise but for his empathy, attentiveness, and his ability to make us feel seen and supported during one of the most uncertain times of our lives. Being on the receiving end of care, rather than delivering it, was a humbling experience. It reminded me that no amount of medical knowledge can fully prepare you for the emotional toll of watching a loved one suffer. It's a different kind of vulnerability, one that strips away titles and roles and leaves you simply as a spouse, a partner, a human being hoping for healing. This journey reaffirmed my respect for the nursing profession and deepened my appreciation for those who choose to serve with heart and integrity. It also reminded me that even in the most unexpected places, like a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean, life has a way of teaching us the most profound lessons. I'd like to recognize Gage for his exceptional nursing care. As healthcare professionals ourselves, we understand the demands of the field. But being on the receiving end of care, especially in such a vulnerable moment, gave us a renewed appreciation for what true leadership and nursing excellence look like. Gage exemplified that in every way.
